Full Stack Developer ? - Software Shots - Issue #10

Hey there, it’s been a while since I have written anything other than code. Being a little crude, but COVID had us by the balls. May be still does. 😂

Do you really want to be a Full Stack Dev?
I remember asking a senior in my first year of college, that “bhaiya, how do I be a full stack dev?” And he gave me a quick understanding of what it actually takes to be a legit Full Stack Dev. I still can’t say I am one. I’ll go through what I have been up to for the past couple of months in the next section and you guys let me know if I am one.
So here’s my two cents on FSDs:
  • You understand frontend technologies like HTML, CSS, JS, preferably a frontend framework/library to spin up a quick project that looks decent and usable (accessibility).
  • You understand HTTP, REST and can write server side code in at least one of the languages. You can quickly put your thoughts to code.
  • The bridging gap between a Frontend and a Backend Developer is DevOps. You can successfully deploy your application. You understand TLS, SSL, Load Balancers, Latency and at least one of the cloud providers (AWS/Azure/GCP). Basically you know your way around a terminal.
This sort of makes you a junior level full stack developer.
What have I been doing?

COVID Help India started when the second wave hit India and this time around I started hearing my friends and family losing their loved ones. It hit different and keeping myself busy with something felt like the only way to fight grief. A professor reached out to me who had some contacts with an NGO and they needed a platform to get their volunteers onboarded. Glad to tell you, it helped a few folks get blood, plasma and vaccine notifications at the right time. :)

This was the highlight for me and I’m in the process of writing how it all happened. But I developed the frontend, backend services and handled the deployment catering to about 3k+ users. It’s fun working with Gaurav Sen and his team.
This is how the new dashboard looks in dark mode.

Although I hate it when a web app is deployed and all the attention goes to frontend, and the hard work on deployemnt + backend just goes unnoticed. :( How do I flex the backend here? Any clues?
Yeah so am I a good enough full stack dev now?
Let me know if you have any questions on any of the above projects. :) Happy Weekend and Stay Safe.
